Acts Of Antisemitism In The Laurentian Region, Quebec

B’nai Brith Canada has contacted Quebec Premier Jean Charest in August 2008, as well as other political leaders with constituents in the St. Agathe Laurentian region and police, urging an immediate response to the rash of hate incidents targeting members of the Jewish community. “This pattern of anti-Jewish incidents targeting religious members of the community is of deep concern,” said Frank Dimant, executive vice-president of B’nai Brith Canada. “We have urged Premier Jean Charest, as well as the Mayor of St. Agathe and other political leaders in the area, urging that they speak out immediately against these acts of hate. They must signal at the highest levels that acts of racism and violence against members of the Jewish community will not be tolerated. We are also requesting that police vigourously pursue a hate crime investigation into the assault of the Jewish father and his three sons.”Allan Adel, national chair of the League for Human Rights of B’nai Brith Canada, citing the League’s 2007 Audit of Antisemitic Incidents, noted the documented increases during the last year of incidents in rural areas of Quebec. “These latest acts of antisemitism in the Laurentians reinforce the need for action to counter this disturbing trend,” he said. “We are deeply disappointed in the passersby who witnessed this assault and yet failed to alert police to the crime in progress. “B’nai Brith will be bringing its Taking Action Against Hate educational campaign to the Laurentian community. It will also be intensifying its 24/7 Community Anti-Hate Hotline – 1-800-892-2624 – and encourage the active participation of individuals to report incidents of antisemitism occurring in their neighbourhoods.”
