Ignoring immigrant Credentials Costs Industry $2 Billion Per Year

Canadian employers who don't recognize the skills and credentials of immigrants are costing Canadians more than $2 billion each year, according to World Education Services (WES).

"Failure to recognize foreign credentials costs all Canadians," says Timothy Owen, director of WES. "Studies show underem-ployed immigrants are losing $5 billion in income taxes alone, assuming a 30 percent tax rate. When you factor in income support and re-training costs due to lack of skills recognition, a serious skills shortage in several key knowledge-based industries, you can see we have a big problem." According to WES, a non-for-profit organization, studies all point to the need to better use the talents of immigrant professionals and skilled workers.
